As part of a Green Bexley initiative to promote environmentally sustainable practices among residents and businesses, the city is working to draft a community bicycle plan, Mayor Ben Kessler said.

Organizers announced the plan at the Oct. 30 Green Bexley Bootcamp session that the city’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Council offered this fall. The bootcamp sessions addressed a variety of topics at locations around the city, focusing on transportation, gardening and food composting.

The purpose of the community bicycle plan is to evaluate Bexley’s bicycle infrastructure and policies and facilitate an environment that goes further in promoting and supporting cycling, Kessler said.

“The community bike plan will involve a public engagement campaign with the goal of creating an even more bike-friendly city of Bexley,” he said. “The process will assist residents and other key stakeholders in evaluating infrastructure, examining best practices from similar communities and establishing priorities based on the community’s values to improve bike friendliness throughout Bexley.”

Development of the plan will include a series of public workshops and group bicycle rides that will be open to the community in order to solicit ideas, Kessler said.

“We will be kicking off our steering committee in the next month or so, with public workshops and community bike rides slated for late winter (or) spring of next year,” he said.

The city has teamed up with Yay! Bikes to help facilitate the plan, Kessler said. Yay! Bikes is a Columbus-based organization that works to improve conditions for people to use bicycles as their mode of transportation, according to the group’s website, yaybikes.com.
