Help shape future of recreational BMX and mountain biking – Mirage News

Last year saw a surge in children and young people embracing bike riding activities on the Mornington Peninsula, with many creating their own jumps within park lands and on roadside reserves.

In response to the community’s interest in bike activities, Mornington Peninsula Shire has appointed @leisure Planners to prepare a Recreational Mountain Bike and BMX Facilities Strategy. This Strategy will ensure dirt jumps, skills parks and pump tracks are in appropriate locations and designed together with the community.

We need your input! Are you or someone you know a keen BMX or mountain bike rider enthusiast? Let us know what is important to you. Tell us what an ideal site should look like and include. Are there existing locations we could consider? To share your ideas, go to mornpen.vic.gov.au/bikesports.

This is the first round of community consultation to inform the Strategy. The next round of consultation will take place mid-year and will provide the community an opportunity to comment on the draft Strategy.

Quote attributable to Mayor Councillor Despi O’Connor:

“We noticed through the lockdown period that more and more locals were coming together embracing bike sports. Unfortunately, some of the jumps were built in sensitive environments or had been considered unsafe.

“We want your input in developing a Recreational Mountain Bike and BMX Facilities Strategy. This feedback will shape the future of this activity throughout our Shire and generate appropriate places where we can build them together.”
