Ireland has qualified its largest ever cycling team for an Olympic Games after securing a quota in the men’s and women’s Madison and Omnium events.
It also means that Ireland will compete in a track cycling team event for the first time at a Games – the Madison is comprised of two riders.
It’s just reward for Ireland’s track cycling squad who’ve achieved consistently positive results over the course of the two-year qualifying period.
More than 10 riders contributed to the men’s and women’s points tally at World Cup, European Championships and World Championship events.
These riders will go through a selection process to identify who will be nominated to represent Team Ireland in Tokyo.
Team Ireland had already qualified three slots for the men’s Road Race and one slot for the men’s Road Time Trial.
Irish riders will compete across six different events: the men’s and women’s Madison, the men’s and women’s Omnium, the men’s Road Race and the men’s Road Time Trial.
