Dubbo Cyclist Haylee Fuller has been at the top of her game for many years. With State and National Championship trophies in her cabinet, this years Dubbo Young Sportsperson of the Year has taken her next step, recently signing with one of the country’s leading cycling teams. Being one to watch from an early age Fuller first hit the National stage in Tasmania in 2017 when she won the U15 Road and Time Trial National Championship. READ ALSO: Being crowned Champion of Champions for those titles, she was on track to take a clean sweep of three victories from three events before bad weather saw the cancellation of the criterium event. Being on their radar for some time, this year Fuller has signed with Sydney Uni-Staminade Cycling, opening the door Fuller to further chase her dreams of making an income from the sport she loves. Such a team will not only support Fuller as she contributes to National Road Series results, but it will also put her front and centre in the eyes of International teams. This is Fullers first season racing in the U19 and Elite categories and it has already been highly successful. She started the season in October winning the Tour of Southland in New Zealand, her first taste of International racing, before doubling up to win the Australian U19 Criterium and Road Race events in Ballarat in January. It was the U19 Criterium title that Fuller ranks as her most satisfying win to date. Fuller reflected, “After a big step up into the U/19 ranks, and as a first year, winning that race has been my favourite to date,” Fuller said. “After a tough race in crazy conditions of wind and extreme rain and running into a barracade, this race has been the most hectic yet almost satisfying as after such a tough race with everything thrown at me I was able to secure a convincing win.” Fuller however did not relax in victory. Only a month later at the NSW Track Cycling Championships Fuller convincingly took Gold medals in the Points Race and the Individual pursuit. On course to add a couple more National titles to her collection Fuller has had to readjust her goals as the National Titles have been indefinitely postponed due to Covid-19. Fullers immediate goal is to obtain a scholarship to the NSW Institute of Sport. This would further extend her support network as she endeavours to juggle elite level sport and the next two years of study to obtain her HSC. Not phased by the uncertainty created by Covid-19, Fuller plans to spend the next few weeks with time off the bike. Instead she will work on strength and conditioning through supported exercise routines while also working on a few dietary alternatives for maximum performance, all while studying.
