Canadian free-ride mountain biking pro Jordie Lunn has died in a crash while trail riding with friends in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, his family announced Friday.
The 36-year-old Lunn, who was described in mountain biking circles as a legend, was known for his spectacular videos, which collected millions of views on YouTube.
In a statement to Pinkbike, Lunn’s family said Lunn “lost his life doing exactly what he loved.”
“Jordie had an incredible 20+ year career as a mountain biker,” his family added. “He will always be cherished for his heart and love that he gave to his family, friends, and fans, as well as the incredible talent that he had on his bikes.”
For someone who pushed the envelope in all kinds of stomach-churning daredevil stunts, Lunn’s final ride was not particularly risky.
Darren Berrecloth, a close friend who was with Lunn when the accident happened Wednesday, told TMZ Sports, “We were riding a mellow trail in Mexico and he came up short on a gap jump and hit his head.”
Lunn, who was wearing a helmet, suffered a fatal head injury.
“I’ve loved Jordie as a brother from the moment we became riding buddies as biking will build that bond in friends,” Berrecloth said. “He was always a inspiration to me to be honest, his ability to see the positive in everything when I was down was uplifting.”
Berrecloth said Lunn had “the heart of a lion and the hug of a grizzly bear.”
Lunn, who lived in Victoria, B.C., competed at Crankworx, Red Bull Rampage and in nearly every major event in free-ride mountain biking, Pinkbike reported.
He built an 80-degree ramp high up a tree for a mind-boggling stunt in his hugely popular “Rough AF” video.
His friend Greg Watts commented on the tragedy: ‘GUTTED. We lost a human that you hope everyone could be like. If he doesn’t make it to heaven then heaven doesn’t f—ing exist.”
