COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Colorado Springs will soon be host to a new multi-day mountain biking competition held on the slopes of Pikes Peak.
The Pikes Peak APEX will take place September 24-27 in 2020. It’s sponsored primarily by RockShox, a Colorado Springs-based company specializing in mountain bike suspension systems.
Micah Rice, the executive director of The Pikes Peak APEX, said this competition has been a long time coming and is excited to organize an event that will be fun for athletes and “weekend warriors” alike.
“With the trail system here in the Pikes Peak region, Colorado Springs deserves to be an internationally recognized endurance sports destination,” Rice said.
Although not all the trails have been selected or announced, Rice said the event will mostly use courses on Pikes Peak, including dirt roads and Jeep trails. Some of the courses will loop, ranging between 35 and 50 miles of travel. The competition will use only existing trails, with a percentage of the proceeds supporting trail maintenance after the race.
“We are extremely excited to have the opportunity to host such an exciting event right here in Colorado Springs on our world-class trails,” said Mallory Burda, brand manager for RockShox. “We consider ourselves pretty lucky having the mountains right outside our office doors, so this will be a ton of fun to invite the greater cycling community together for a weekend of racing, cheering, as well as giving back to our local trail organizations.”
