The facility has operated for almost 30 years.
One of the top cycling tracks in the county is closing its doors in Blaine.
The Velodrome at the National Sports Center announced on Facebook that Thursday was its last race day. Originally built for the 1990 Olympic Festival, the track hosts both sprint and endurance races.
“This evening marks the final lap in our 30-year run,” the Facebook post read. “We’ve lovingly restored, repaired and nurtured the the track itself – thanks to our village of hard-working and dedicated volunteers, our loyal and generous sponsors and an army of individual financial supporters.”
Since its construction, the Velodrome has hosted multiple national championships. The facility is also home to programs for amateurs and children.
The Velodrome is part of the National Sports Center, which also includes athletic fields, a golf course, an ice rink and other facilities. It is the largest amateur sports complex in the world.
It is currently owned by the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission, which has confirmed that the facility is in the process of being purchased by Spring Lake Park Schools, with demolition slated for next spring.
“Spring Lake Park Schools has exercised their option of purchasing the site of the velodrome,” the National Sports Center told KSTP. “The The Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission, owners of the site, intend to move forward with the sale of the land to the school district this fall.”
